Students from Ghent University visit the IOPC Funds

Posted: 25/04/2023

On 25 April 2023, Claims Manager, Mark Homan, had the pleasure of welcoming students from the Law Faculty of Ghent University, Belgium, to the IOPC Funds.

Mr Homan gave an overview of the role of the organisation and the legal framework behind the international liability and compensation regime.  He addressed the recent challenges faced by the Organisation and went on to discuss the types of claims covered by the 1992 Civil Liability and Fund Conventions and the admissibility criteria applied when assessing claims for compensation.  He focused in particular on the IOPC Funds’ policy on claims for environmental damage.

The students, who were all studying for a Master’s degree in maritime science, showed great interest and asked a number of questions.

The IOPC Funds are always happy to support universities and other educational institutions and looks forward to welcoming more students in the future to share knowledge and promote awareness of the international regime.
