At the invitation of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the Vice President of the Republic of Colombia, together with the Maritime Authority of Colombia (DIMAR), IOPC Funds’ Director, José Maura, and the Head of Claims, Liliana Monsalve, participated in the 2019 World Maritime Day Parallel Event, Cartagenas de Indias, Colombia, from 15 to 17 September 2019.

The World Maritime Day Parallel Event promotes the importance of shipping safety, maritime security and the marine environment and is held in a different IMO Member State each year.  This year’s event in Colombia also coincided with the State’s commemoration of two hundred years of independence.

The theme for 2019 “Empowering Women in the Maritime Community” provided an opportunity to raise the importance of gender equality in the maritime industry, in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

Multiple events were held alongside the main celebration for World Maritime Day.  In particular, the IOPC Funds was invited by the Colombian Maritime Law Association (ACOLDEMAR) to participate in the third International Seminar on Maritime Law.  On the first day, José Maura was given the privilege of opening the seminar with the hosting party.  On the second day, Liliana Monsalve delivered a presentation on the legal framework behind the international liability and compensation regime.  The seminar focused on current issues of special importance to the maritime community.

Both events were well attended by national and international transport companies, insurers, port authorities, maritime agencies, consultants, lawyers, students and Government agencies.
