Agia Zoni II – Latest developments

During the week of 2 October 2017, the Director, José Maura, travelled to Greece together with members of the Secretariat. He met with the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, Panagiotis Kouroumplis, Vice-Minister Nektarios Santorinios and Secretary-General Dionysis Charalambo Kalamatianos, as well as representatives from the Hellenic Coast Guard to discuss the Agia Zoni II incident.
At the meeting the Director expressed the concern of the IOPC Funds for the damage caused by the incident and confirmed its support to Greece. He also confirmed that the IOPC Funds planned to establish a claims handling office in Piraeus.
The Director took the opportunity to visit a number of the areas affected by pollution damage from the incident, noting that clean-up operations were continuing at the sites most affected and that a number of local businesses were likely to have been impacted by the spill.
