IOPC Funds’ Director, Mr Gaute Sivertsen, recently visited the Vice Minister of Oceans and Fisheries of the Republic of Korea, Mr Sungbum Kim, in Seoul. Mr Kim is well known to the Director and the organisation, having represented the Republic of Korea at meetings of the governing bodies and chaired the Supplementary Fund Assembly for 11 years from 2011 to 2022.  He also played a significant role in maintaining strong cooperation between the IOPC Funds and the State in respect of the Hebei Spirit incident which took place off Taean in 2007 and led to almost 130 000 claims for compensation.

Mr Sivertsen took the opportunity to congratulate Vice-Minister Kim on his new position before discussing recent developments in the international liability and compensation regime, as well as other matters of mutual interest. The Director also thanked the Vice Minister for the continued cooperation between the IOPC Funds and the Republic of Korea.

The Republic of Korea has actively supported the work of the IOPC Funds over the years and is a Member State of both the 1992 Fund and the Supplementary Fund.
