Director’s Visit to India

The Director, Gaute Sivertsen, travelled to Mumbai, India to visit the Directorate General of Shipping, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways during the week of 6 March 2023.
He met with Mr Rajiv Jalota, the current Chairman of the Mumbai Port Authority (MbPA) and Indian Ports Association, who has also taken the further responsibility of Director General of Shipping. They were joined by Mr Kumar Sanjay Bariar, the Additional Director General of Shipping, and other officials. Following general introductions, the Director reported on the latest activities of the organisation and developments currently impacting the international liability and compensation regime in general.

Mr Sivertsen also took the opportunity to visit serving member of the joint Audit Body, Mr Vatsalya Saxena.

India has been Party to the 1992 Fund Convention since 2001 and following its gradual increase in oil trade over the years, it now reports the largest volume of oil imports each year and, as a result is the largest contributor to the 1992 Fund, representing some 16% of the total quantity of oil reported.
