IMLI students visit the IOPC Funds
On 14 April 2026, the IOPC Funds hosted 60 students from the International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI) at its offices in London. The students are pursuing various postgraduate programmes in international maritime law and related disciplines.
IOPC Funds’ Deputy Director and Head of Claims Department, Liliana Monsalve, and Claims Manager, Matthew de Plater, delivered presentations to the students across two sessions, focused on the practical aspects of claims management.
They provided a brief overview of the general principles underpinning the international liability and compensation regime for oil pollution damage, the claims-handling process, and the criteria applied by the IOPC Funds in determining the admissibility of claims. The presentations also featured case studies on the establishment of claims submission offices and the operation of claims caravans in the context of the Princess Empress and Terranova incidents in the Philippines.
Throughout both sessions, the students demonstrated a keen interest in the topics covered and posed a wide range of questions.
IMLI, established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to provide advanced education in international maritime law, is based in Malta.
The IOPC Funds regularly delivers lectures to students of maritime law from IMLI and other universities as part of its efforts to enhance awareness and understanding of the international liability and compensation regime for oil pollution.
