IOPC Funds celebrates International Day for Women in Maritime
The IOPC Funds proudly recognises International Day for Women in Maritime, observed on 18 May every year. Established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the day is dedicated to celebrating women in the industry and to promoting the recruitment, retention, and sustained employment of women in the maritime sector.
The theme for this year’s event is “Safe Horizons: Women Shaping the Future of Maritime Safety”, and IMO is hosting a number of events and a symposium under the same theme at its headquarters in London. The IOPC Funds will be represented at the symposium and look forward to the discussions, which are expected to focus on empowering women and advancing gender equality in the maritime sector.
The IOPC Funds, under the leadership of its Director, Gaute Sivertsen, is committed to gender equality and the empowerment of women and continues to work with Member States towards ensuring gender balance in the composition of the leadership of the organisation’s governing and oversight bodies.
The IOPC Funds has also actively participated in the IMOGender programme, the mentorship scheme developed by the International Maritime Organization for female students of the International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI) and the World Maritime University (WMU), since 2022. Under this initiative, IOPC Funds’ Deputy Director and Head of Claims Department, Liliana Monsalve, and Senior Claims Manager, Chiara DellaMea, have served as mentors for students in both institutions.
