IOPC Funds delivers lecture on Gulfstream incident at Ipieca Week
At the invitation of Ipieca, the IOPC Funds delivered a lecture on the Gulfstream incident on 16 April 2026 in London, United Kingdom as part of Ipieca week 2026. Ipieca’s flagship event brings together member company representatives and senior officials from a range of UN, NGO, academic, investor and business organisations. It provides a platform to share knowledge and gain insight into how the oil and gas industry can contribute to sustainable energy transition.
In early February 2024, the articulated tank barge Gulfstream, which was being towed by the tug Solo Creed, capsized and sank, causing an oil spill spanning approximately 16 km off the coast of Tobago. No distress or emergency calls were transmitted by the tug, and efforts by the authorities in Trinidad and Tobago to identify the owner of the tug and barge have so far proved inconclusive, although investigations are still underway.
During his presentation, IOPC Funds’ Claims Manager, Mr Mark Homan, examined the complexities surrounding the incident and outlined the impact of the spill, as well as the response measures that were implemented. He underscored the importance of compliance with standards relating to the management of shipping registries, noting that international co-operation during such incidents is essential to ensuring that the international compensation regime functions effectively.
Ipieca, established at the request of the United Nations Environment Programme and based in London, is the global oil and gas association dedicated to advancing environmental and social performance across the energy transition.
