On 30 August 2024, the IOPC Funds hosted a group of 12 cadets from École du Service Public de la Mer (ESPMER), a French public institution responsible for maritime training, at its London offices.

The visit offered the cadets, who are studying courses related to maritime affairs, safety, and environmental protection, a valuable opportunity to learn about the international liability and compensation regime for ship-source oil pollution.

Claims Manager, Mark Homan, welcomed the students and presented a comprehensive overview of the IOPC Funds’ role and operational processes, highlighting the types of claims that can be submitted for compensation following an oil pollution incident and the criteria applied by the IOPC Funds in determining their admissibility.

His presentation also covered ongoing oil pollution incidents involving the IOPC Funds, specifically the Marine Honour, Gulfstream and Princess Empress incidents in Singapore, Trinidad and Tobago and Philippines respectively.

The Claims Manager engaged interactively with the students, answering a wide range of questions after the presentation.

The IOPC Funds is committed to sharing knowledge and raising awareness about the international liability and compensation regime for ship-source oil pollution. Each year, the organisation extends support to educational institutions by delivering lectures to university students, helping them gain a deeper understanding of the pertinent Conventions.
