On 25 March 2025, the IOPC Funds hosted over 60 students from the International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI) in its London offices. The students are pursuing various postgraduate programmes focused on international maritime law and legislation.

Deputy Director and Head of Claims Department, Liliana Monsalve, and Claims Manager, Matthew de Plater, delivered presentations on the practical aspects of claims management. They highlighted the importance of allocating adequate resources not only to handle claims efficiently but also to assist claimants in the submission of their claims. The presentations also stressed the need for consistent and transparent communication with stakeholders throughout the handling of an incident and concluded by addressing some of the challenges faced by the Secretariat in recent cases.

The students actively participated and demonstrated a keen interest in the topics covered, asking thoughtful questions, which led to lively discussions.

IMLI, established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to provide advanced education in international maritime law, is based in Malta.

The IOPC Funds regularly give lectures to students of maritime law from IMLI and other universities as part of its efforts to enhance awareness and understanding of the international liability and compensation regime for oil pollution.
