IOPC Funds hosts students from Queen Mary University of London

On 6 February 2025, the IOPC Funds hosted a group of 12 students from Queen Mary University of London at the organisation’s London Offices. The visit provided the students, who are studying for a Postgraduate course in International Shipping Law (LLM), a valuable opportunity to enhance their understanding of the 1992 Civil Liability Convention, the 1992 Fund Convention, as well as the Supplementary Fund Protocol. The three legal instruments form the basis of the international liability and compensation regime for ship-source oil pollution.
IOPC Funds’ Claims Manager, Mr Matthew de Plater, welcomed the students and provided a comprehensive overview of the IOPC Funds’ role and operational processes. He covered the different types of claims that can be submitted for compensation following an oil pollution incident and the admissibility criteria applied by the IOPC Funds.
The Claims Manager’s presentation was delivered to an engaged audience who asked a wide range of questions at the end of the session.
The IOPC Funds is committed to sharing knowledge and raising awareness about the international liability and compensation regime for ship-source oil pollution. Each year, the organisation extends support to educational institutions by delivering lectures to university students, helping them gain a deeper understanding of the pertinent Conventions.
