The annual IOPC Funds’ Short Course took place from Monday 11 to Friday 15 November at the Funds’ headquarters in London and was supported by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the International Group of P&I Associations, the International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation Ltd (ITOPF), INTERTANKO and the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS).
With nine participants from nine 1992 Fund Member States, the Short Course covered all aspects of the work of the IOPC Funds and the international liability and compensation regime in general. The programme included presentations from a variety of speakers, practical exercises allowing participants to study a theoretical incident and the subsequent claims submission process as well as visits to the IMO Headquarters, the offices of the International Group of P&I Associations and one of their members (Steamship Mutual Club), and a guided tour of the Lloyd’s of London building.
Once again the Short Course has received very positive feedback from this year’s participants and the Director is delighted that the Short Course is proving to be a valuable tool which enables the Secretariat to connect with both meeting delegates and those government officials who have responsibility in areas of oil reporting and oil spill preparedness. The dates for the 2014 IOPC Funds’ Short Course and the deadline for nomination by governments will be announced in the new year.
