On 23 February 2025, the IOPC Funds hosted a group of 37 students from Erasmus University Rotterdam at the organisation’s London offices.

The visit, which takes place each year, provided the students, who are studying for a Master of Laws Degree, a valuable opportunity to gain insight into the 1992 Civil Liability Convention, the 1992 Fund Convention, as well as the Supplementary Fund Protocol. These three Conventions constitute the legal framework governing the international liability and compensation regime for ship-source oil pollution.

IOPC Funds’ Claims Manager, Mr Matthew de Plater, delivered a comprehensive overview of the IOPC Funds’ role and operational processes before focusing on claims and compensation. He outlined the types of claims covered under the 1992 Civil Liability and Fund Conventions, including the admissibility criteria applied by the IOPC Funds following an oil spill incident. The session also featured a case study examining claims for compensation arising from the Princess Empress incident in the Philippines.

Throughout the presentation, the students demonstrated keen interest and posed a wide range of questions.

The IOPC Funds remains committed to sharing knowledge and raising awareness about the international liability and compensation regime for ship-source oil pollution. Each year, the organisation supports educational institutions by delivering lectures to university students, helping them gain a deeper understanding of the relevant Conventions.
