At the invitation of Malaysia’s Ministry of Environment, the IOPC Funds participated in a regional workshop focused on claims and compensation from 14 to 17 May 2024. Claims Manager, Ana Cuesta, joined representatives from the International Group of P&I Associations and ITOPF to deliver a number of presentations during the four-day event, which was attended by officials from the Malaysia Marine and Fishery Departments.

Her presentations covered the international liability and compensation regime for oil pollution damage and specifically the claims-handling process in the fisheries and tourism sectors

ITOPF led sessions on the conduct of environmental assessments following an oil spill, and participants also gained insight into the Malaysian Government’s pollution response mechanisms and the processes involved in the compilation and submission of clean-up claims.

The event featured a practical aspect that saw attendees participate in quizzes, group exercises and discussions during which their questions were addressed by experts and workshop facilitators.
