At the invitation of the Regional Organization for the Conservation of the Environment of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden (PERSGA), the IOPC Funds participated in a national workshop on liability and compensation for ship-source oil pollution incidents from 21–23 November 2017 in Cairo, Egypt.
The workshop, hosted by PERSGA in collaboration with the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA), was attended by around 30 participants, representing the EEAA, other government and port authorities as well as representatives from the Suez Canal Authority and the SUMED pipelines company.
Head of External Relations and Conference, Mr Thomas Liebert, jointly with representatives from the International Group of P&I Associations and ITOPF, delivered a range of presentations on the oil and HNS pollution compensation regimes and discussed the possibility of Egypt joining the 1992 Fund. The workshop also introduced the other maritime liability conventions and how all these conventions would be applied to various shipping incidents.
