At the invitation of the Malaysian Marine Department and in collaboration with the Malaysian Maritime Transport Training Institute (MATRAIN), the IOPC Funds delivered a short online induction course on 18 June 2025.

The event was attended by eight 1992 Fund Member States (Angola, Cambodia, Liberia, Madagascar, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines and the United Republic of Tanzania) and two non-Member States (Bangladesh and Myanmar).

It was formally opened by Captain Nazri Bin Abu Hassan, Deputy Director General (Planning) of the Malaysia Marine Department, who took the opportunity to emphasise the importance of cooperation and training activities, such as the online event, in relation to the protection of the marine environment.

The Director of the IOPC Funds, Gaute Sivertsen, provided a general introduction to the international liability and compensation regime for oil pollution and the work of the IOPC Funds before handing over to the Policy Officer, Yuji Okugawa, and Chief of Finance, Claire Montgomery, who focused on the oil reporting and contributions system. They explained how the IOPC Funds are financed, the related obligations on 1992 Fund Member States, and the support available from the Secretariat to ensure the smooth functioning of the regime.  The audience asked a number of questions during the course of the event and were encouraged to contact the Secretariat for any further guidance.

The Secretariat is happy to have had this opportunity to deliver this short but useful online course and thanks the Malaysian Marine Department for the initiative.

Any Member State interested in similar customised training, whether it relates to the claims submission process, the oil reporting process or any other area of the Funds’ work, should contact the Secretariat via outreach@iopcfunds.org.
