On 13 May 2025, the IOPC Funds hosted a webinar for approximately 50 participants from the Ecuadorean Navy and other relevant national government agencies.

Claims Manager, Ana Cuesta, delivered a presentation on a wide range of issues to do with the international liability and compensation regime for oil pollution from tankers.  The presentation specifically focused on the legal framework applicable under the regime as well as practical guidance on the presentation of claims for compensation and the admissibility criteria applied by the IOPC Funds in the assessment of such claims.

The presentation covered the types of claims which can be presented to the IOPC Funds, including costs incurred in clean-up operations, preventive measures, post spill studies and reinstatement of the environment, fisheries and tourism claims.  The aim of this webinar was to develop the participants’ understanding of the role of the IOPC Funds, train them in how to identify and present relevant claims, and ensure that they are prepared in the event that an incident were to impact Ecuador, which has been a 1992 Fund Member State since 2008.

The IOPC Funds regularly give presentations and training to Member States and relevant organisations as part of its efforts to enhance awareness and understanding of the international liability and compensation regime for oil pollution. These can be in the format of customised short webinars or in-person activities over a number of days.  For further information, contact the Secretariat at outreach@iopcfunds.org.
