Prestige Incident – Meetings in Spain

The Director, José Maura, and the Head of the Claims Department, Liliana Monsalve, visited Madrid during the week of 9 January 2017. The purpose of the visit was to discuss upcoming hearings on the Prestige incident with the 1992 Fund’s lawyers and experts in Spain. They participated in a coordination meeting with the legal team defending the shipowner, the Club and the 1992 Fund before the Spanish Court. The proceedings are expected to commence in early 2017. Establishing the quantum of the claims submitted will be the focus of this part of the case. A Court decision is expected towards the end of the year.
Mr Maura and Ms Monsalve also met with Mr R. Rodriguez Valero, Director general de la Marina Mercante to discuss cooperation between the IOPC Funds and the Spanish Government. They also visited SASEMAR (Spanish Coast Guard) and met with the Director, Mr Juan Luis Pedrosa Fernández and a number of his colleagues. In addition, they visited the operation room of the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Madrid.
The Director delivered a presentation on the international liability and compensation regime and the work of the IOPC Funds at an event organised by ANAVE (Association of Spanish Shipowners), which was attended by Spanish shipowners and maritime lawyers.
