On 4 July 2024, IOPC Funds’ Deputy Director and Head of Claims Department, Mrs Liliana Monsalve, welcomed students from Queen Mary University of London to the organisation’s offices in London. The visit enabled the students, who are studying for a Master’s Degree in Law (LLM), to gain a deeper understanding of the 1992 Civil Liability Convention, the 1992 Fund Convention, as well as the Supplementary Fund Protocol. Together, these instruments form the legal framework under which the international liability and compensation regime for ship-source oil pollution operates.

During her presentation, Mrs Monsalve provided a comprehensive overview of the IOPC Funds’ role and operational processes, detailing the different types of claims that can be submitted for compensation following an oil pollution incident and the criteria applied by the IOPC Funds in determining their admissibility.

The Deputy Director had an interactive engagement with the students that saw her answer a wide range of questions.

The IOPC Funds is committed to sharing knowledge and raising awareness about the international liability and compensation regime for ship-source oil pollution. Each year, the organisation extends support to educational institutions by delivering lectures to university students, helping them gain a deeper understanding of the pertinent Conventions.
