The IOPC Funds were delighted to participate in Spillcon, the international oil spill conference for the Asia‑Pacific region, which took place in Perth, Australia from 20–23 May 2019.

On the first day of the event, the Director, José Maura, contributed to a workshop organised by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and SPREP (a regional organisation established by the Governments and Administrations of the Pacific). The workshop focused on the importance of preparedness and response to incidents, especially in remote locations. Mr Maura provided a liability and compensation perspective.

Later in the week, the Director delivered a presentation on claims and compensation for oil spills within the main conference.

The Secretariat also had exhibition space at the event, which it shared with the International Group of P&I Associations. The stand attracted a large number of visitors and provided many opportunities to create awareness of the international liability and compensation regime, to explain how the two organisations work together to provide compensation for tanker spills and to provide guidance on the claims process and admissibility criteria.
