On 20 February 2024, the Deputy Director/Head of Claims Department, Liliana Monsalve, had the pleasure of welcoming students from the VIVES University of Applied Economic Sciences, Belgium, to the office of the IOPC Funds.

Mrs Monsalve provided an overview of the role of the organisation and the legal framework behind the international liability and compensation regime for oil pollution. She detailed the various types of claims covered by the 1992 Civil Liability and Fund Conventions, emphasising the criteria applied when determining the admissibility of claims for compensation.

Finally, she stressed the significance of the 2010 Hazardous and Noxious Substances Convention (HNS Convention) as a crucial final piece in completing the liability and compensation regime for incidents of ship-source oil pollution.

The students, all studying for bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management with a focus on cargo and liability insurance in transport, actively participated and demonstrated a keen interest in the discussions.

The IOPC Funds are always happy to support universities and other educational institutions, and looks forward to welcoming more students in the future to share knowledge and promote awareness of the international regime.
