Visit by India
The Director, Gaute Sivertsen, was pleased to welcome a delegation of senior officials from India, headed by the Director General of Shipping, Shyam Jagannathan, to the IOPC Funds’ offices on 30 November 2023.
Mr Sivertsen and Deputy Director, Liliana Monsalve, together with Claims Manager, Mark Homan, held a productive meeting with the delegation in which the Director gave a general presentation about the organisation but also covered the current challenges facing the international liability and compensation regime. They discussed shipping’s transition to new fuels and the implications for the 2010 HNS Convention.
Mr Sivertsen took the opportunity to congratulate India for the successful nomination of Captain Anish Joseph as a candidate for the IOPC Funds’ Audit Body, who was elected in November 2023.
India is the largest contributor to the 1992 Fund, having imported some 231 million tonnes of oil in 2022. It is a current member of the 1992 Fund Executive Committee and actively supports the work of the organisation, engaging with the Secretariat on training and outreach activities on a regular basis. The next event to be organised by India with the IOPC Funds will be a workshop to take place in Kochi in January 2024.
