VIVES University Students visit IOPC Funds

On 26 February 2025, the IOPC Funds welcomed a group of students from the VIVES University of Applied Economic Sciences, Belgium, to the organisation’s offices in London. The group of 14 students are studying for a bachelor’s degree in finance and insurance.
IOPC Funds’ Claims Managers, Mr Matthew de Plater and Mr Ali Kielany, delivered two presentations focused on the role of the organisation and claims, respectively. Mr de Plater provided an overview of the structure and functions of the IOPC Funds and the legal framework behind the international liability and compensation regime for oil pollution damage.
Mr Kielany’s presentation detailed the various types of claims covered by the 1992 Civil Liability and Fund Conventions, emphasising the criteria applied when determining the admissibility of claims for compensation.
The students actively participated and demonstrated a keen interest in the discussions that took place following the conclusion of each of the sessions.
The IOPC Funds is committed to sharing knowledge and raising awareness about the international liability and compensation regime for ship-source oil pollution. Each year, the organisation extends support to educational institutions by delivering lectures to university students, helping them gain a deeper understanding of the pertinent Conventions.
