Webinar training on the 2010 HNS Convention for Nigeria
The IOPC Funds were delighted to be invited by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), to deliver a webinar and training exercise on the 2010 HNS Convention on 29 September 2023.
The event was attended by some 20 representatives from various Departments within the Agency, including those working within a dedicated HNS Unit. The Agency reported that the Unit was working on preparations for Nigeria to ratify the 2010 HNS Convention and had already organised two interactive meetings with key stakeholders in Nigeria on the Convention. One of the key recommendations from those meetings was to organise training for the HNS Unit officers on the Convention and the benefits for Nigeria of becoming a Contracting State.
HNS Project Officer, Thomas Liebert, and Claims Manager, Mark Homan, delivered a general overview of the Convention and the types of damage and claims it would cover. They then focused on the importance of accurate and timely reporting of contributing cargo under the Convention and led an exercise to identify relevant substances and who would be required to report those substances as a ‘receiver’ of the cargo.
The engagement from the participants made the event valuable to presenters and audience alike.
