At the invitation of Maritime New Zealand, the Director and Ms Chiara Della Mea, Claims Manager, were in Wellington from 18-20 November 2013. Together with representatives from ITOPF and the International Group of P&I Associations, they ran a half-day seminar for staff of Maritime New Zealand and a 2-day workshop on the international civil liability and compensation regime for government officials from the region.
The half-day seminar, which was attended by some 30 members of staff from Maritime New Zealand, covered both a general overview of the legal framework of the international liability and compensation regime as well as the more practical side of claims and compensation. The workshop, which was attended by 28 officials from both New Zealand and Australia, covered the compensation regime and the work of the IOPC Funds in much more detail and included both presentations and practical exercises. Both the seminar and the workshop went well and the feedback received was very positive. The variety of questions raised by the attendees demonstrated their engagement and interest in the international regime and the IOPC Funds made some very good contacts during their visit.
