Workshop on oil spill claims and compensation Port Klang, Malaysia

Mr Matthew Somerville, Head Claims Department/Techncial Adviser and Ms Ana Cuesta, Claims Administrator, ran a claims and compensation workshop at the request of the Malaysian Marine Department in Port Klang from 15-17 May 2012. They were supported by representatives from Gard P&I Club, on behalf of the International Group of P&I Associations and ITOPF. The workshop, which was attended by 35 participants from various governmental departments, included presentations on the international liability and compensation regime in general, specific types of claims arising from oil pollution incidents, as well as a brief introduction to the HNS Convention. The workshop finished with an exercise based on a theoretical oil spill with participants focussed on the issues of recording costs and preparation of claims under the 1992 Conventions.
