The IOPC Funds welcomed a group of 12 young politicians representing the various political parties in Norway to its offices on 29 May 2024. The group was in London as part of a shipping-focused tour of the city organised by the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association.

IOPC Funds’ Director, Gaute Sivertsen, gave an overview of the international liability and compensation regime for ship-sourced oil pollution and the role of the organisation as well as its relationship with the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Mr Sivertsen, a national of Norway, shared his background in maritime affairs and his role as the Member State’s representative to the Legal Committee of IMO and at the meetings of the IOPC Funds’ governing bodies for 30 years, before being elected as Director of the IOPC Funds in 2021. He explained the key issues he has been dealing with since he took up office in January 2022 and the challenges that he sees ahead of him during the rest of his five-year term.

The Director’s presentation, which was well received by the audience, led to many questions and interesting discussions.
