Final webinar in current series delivered: The HNS Convention: Why It Is Needed Now – Reporting and contributions

The final session in the IOPC Funds’ webinar series was delivered on 28 May 2025. The last module in this popular series began in March with an introduction to the International Convention on Liability and Compensation for Damage in Connection with the Carriage of Hazardous and Noxious Substances by Sea (the HNS 2010 Convention). This final session followed on from that but turned the focus to some of the practical aspects of implementing the Convention, specifically reporting and contributions.
With eight Contracting States having ratified the Protocol and several others expressing firm commitments to accede in the near future, the Convention is expected to enter into force in 2027 and the IOPC Funds is committed to assisting all key stakeholders in understanding the crucial aspect of reporting and to ensuring they are aware of all the tools and support available to help them.
HNS Project Manager, Gillian Grant, delivered a 15-minute presentation covering those matters at two separate webinar sessions during the day to accommodate participants from different time zones. Each presentation was followed by a lively 15-minute Q&A session.
The webinar series has consistently attracted wide international participation in large numbers since its inception in October 2023. Whilst the Secretariat has no plans to begin a new series at this stage, in light of the interest and positive feedback received, it does plan to explore various options for providing further online training, including via educational videos and other materials, in the future. All events will be advertised via the Funds’ website as usual.
