The Head of External Relations and Conference, Thomas Liebert, participated in the High Level Meeting and Launch of the fortieth anniversary celebrations of the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC). The Centre was set up under the framework of the Barcelona Convention and aims at providing assistance to the 21 States bordering the Mediterranean.
The commemorative event took place on 4 October 2016 within the framework of the first Malta Maritime Summit in the presence of delegates from 17 countries from the region. Mr Liebert participated in a panel discussion alongside a number of other organisations on the topic of forty years of partnership with REMPEC in the field of prevention of, preparedness for and response to marine pollution from ships.
A visit of one of the vessels stationed in Malta which is part of EMSA’s network of stand-by oil spill response vessels was also organised on that occasion.
