Thomas Liebert, Head External Relations and Conference Department and Mark Homan, Claims Manager, participated in a claims and compensation workshop and a technical session on costs for providing assistance and reimbursement, in Mohammedia, Morocco from 26-28 November 2012. This workshop was jointly organised with the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC) and the Mediterranean Oil Industry Group (MOIG) for the Arab States of the Mediterranean. This event was also supported by ITOPF and the International Group of P&I Associations and sponsored by the Societé Anonyme Marocaine de l’Industrie du Raffinage (SAMIR).
The two sessions focussed on discussing with the Government and industry representatives the international compensation regime for damage caused by oil pollution and its implementation at national level. A series of recommendations were made focussing on the reinforcement of regional and sub-regional cooperation, the need to share information, strengthen capacity building to improve the level of preparedness and ensure the widest level of ratification of the relevant international conventions in the region.
The event was attended by 48 participants from seven Arab speaking States within the region, the oil industry and representatives from the supporting organisations.
