On 17 June 2024, the IOPC Funds’ Deputy Director and Head of Claims, Mrs Liliana Monsalve, delivered a presentation at the International Maritime Law Institute’s (IMLI) 35th Anniversary International Conference, on the theme “Promoting the Implementation of IMO Objectives through Maritime Legislation”, in Valletta, Malta. She  highlighted  the 1992 Civil Liability and Fund Conventions, noting the proven successes of the international liability and compensation regime in the over 150 incidents for which claims were settled within its framework.

Mrs Monsalve identified Member States, oil receivers, and shipowners as key stakeholders whose actions remain critical to the implementation of the international liability and compensation regime. She stressed the need for national legislation to be aligned with provisions of the relevant conventions.

Following her presentation, the Deputy Director joined other experts in a panel discussion focused on “International Efforts to Mitigate the Marine Environmental Crisis,” during which she provided insight into the vital role the IOPC Funds plays in ensuring the prompt payment of compensation to persons and entities affected by oil pollution damage and in protecting the marine environment following incidents.

IMLI, established by the IMO to provide advanced education in international maritime law, is based in Malta.
