Director delivers lecture for students of the IFLOS annual academy in Hamburg

The Director, Gaute Sivertsen, returned to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) in Hamburg, Germany on 22 August 2023 to deliver a lecture to students participating in an annual summer academy.  Organised by the International Foundation for the Law of the Sea (IFLOS), the four-week course covers issues relating to international law and maritime law, and attracts a range of participants, such as diplomats, practitioners, PhD students, etc.

Mr Sivertsen delivered a lecture on compensation for oil pollution damage, in which he explained the legal framework behind the international liability and compensation regime, the role of the IOPC Funds and the recent and future challenges it faces as an organisation.  He also gave an overview of other key international liability conventions and national systems that exist for compensating victims of oil pollution damage.

The lecture saw the participation of students from various States and was followed by an interactive question and answer session.
