The IOPC Funds were pleased to participate in the second series of webinars organised by the Global Initiative for West, Central and Southern Africa (GI WACAF Project) on oil spill preparedness and response, held on 29 September 2021.  This webinar, the fifth in the series, was dedicated to the international liability and compensation regime.

Claims Manager, Chiara DellaMea, and Claims Administrator, Chrystelle Collier, were joined by representatives from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Group of P&I Associations, and together the three organisations covered the international Conventions for oil pollution damage (the 1992 Civil Liability and Fund Conventions),  the International Convention on Civil Liability for Bunker Oil Pollution Damage (Bunker Convention 2001) and the Convention on Limitation of Liability for Maritime Claims (LLMC).  The IOPC Funds and the International Group each discussed the role of their respective organisations and provided an overview of the international liability and compensation regime, whilst IMO focused on the scope and implementation of the Conventions.

The webinar was conducted in French in the morning and in English in the afternoon and attracted over 200 participants from the GI WACAF region.

The next webinar in this series will focus on claims for compensation following an oil spill and will take place on 13 October 2021.  Interested participants should register to participate here: https://www.giwacaf.net/en/webinars/season-2-webinar-6-compensation-claim
