The IOPC Funds participated remotely in a Maritime Law Symposium organised by the Ibero-American Institute of Maritime Law (IIDM) from 22 to 24 March in Lima, Peru. The event brought together leading experts in the legal profession to share knowledge and experiences. It provided an opportunity to analyse and discuss the legal topics which are currently critical to the maritime industry.

Head of Claims, Liliana Monsalve, delivered an online presentation on the international liability and compensation regime. Reference was made to the unfortunate marine pollution incident that had impacted the coastline of Peru (which is not a 1992 Fund Member State) earlier this year.

A number of Ibero-American States have yet to ratify the 1992 Civil Liability and Fund Conventions, and the symposium provided an opportunity to discuss the benefits for States to be Party to these Conventions in the event of an oil spill. The event also created and promoted professional networks and collaboration across the maritime community of Latin American countries.
