IMO regional seminar, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The Legal Counsel, Mrs Akiko Yoshida, attended an IMO regional seminar in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 4 – 6 November 2014. The seminar was funded and hosted by the Government of Malaysia and formed part of the IMO’s Integrated Technical Cooperation Programme (ITCP) with a special focus on the international liability regime.
The seminar covered training modules on ratification of treaties and legal drafting, as well as various IMO liability conventions, including the 1992 Civil Liability and Fund Conventions, the 2010 HNS Convention, the Wreck Removal Convention, the Athens Convention relating to the Carriage of Passengers and their Luggage by Sea (PAL), 1974 and the Convention on Limitation of Liability for Maritime Claims (LLMC), 1976.
Mrs Yoshida gave presentations focusing on the legal framework and implementation of the 1992 Civil Liability and Fund Conventions and the 2010 HNS Protocol. Input from a practical viewpoint on these Conventions was also provided by the International Group of P&I Associations. The seminar attendees, who came from 11 countries from South East Asia and the Pacific region, actively participated in the seminar through the sharing of ideas relevant to their own domestic experiences.
