Organised and funded by IMO and IPIECA within the framework of the GI-WACAF project, the workshop took place from 5-7 November 2014 and was focused on the international liability and compensation regime. It was hosted by the Department of Environment and Nature Conservation of the Ministry of Forests, Environment and Nature Conservation of the Republic of Gabon and was aimed at facilitating a better understanding and encouraging effective implementation of the compensation regime in West and Central African States.
The workshop was run by Thomas Liebert, Head, External Relations and Conference Department, and Ana Cuesta, Claims Administrator with assistance from ITOPF and The Standard Club (P&I Club member of the International Group).
Around 45 participants attended the workshop, coming from various ministries and governmental agencies. Representatives from the oil industry members of UPEGA (Union Pétrolière Gabonaise) also attended the event as well as delegates from four other French-speaking countries of the region (Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Congo and Togo).
The IOPC Funds were delighted with the active and positive participation of all delegates during the workshop, which also suggested that the objective of improving understanding had been achieved.
