IOPC Funds hosts students from the University of Deusto
On 9 May 2024, the IOPC Funds hosted a group of 28 students from the University of Deusto, at its offices in London. The visit, which is a yearly occurrence, provided the students, who are studying for a Master’s Degree in Maritime Law, a valuable opportunity to learn about the 1992 Civil Liability and 1992 Fund Conventions and the Supplementary Fund Protocol, which together form the basis of the international liability and compensation regime for ship-source oil pollution. In addition, an overview of the 2010 Convention on the Carriage of Hazardous and Noxious Substances (HNS) by sea was provided.
Claims Manager, Mark Homan, welcomed the students and gave a comprehensive overview of the organisation’s role and the legal framework behind the international regime. His presentation provided insight into the types of claims covered under the 1992 Civil Liability and Fund Conventions and the admissibility criteria applied by the IOPC Funds. He also explained the obligations and responsibilities of Member States in terms of oil reporting, noting in particular how contributions ensure the financing of the IOPC Funds.
The presentation was followed by an interactive session during which the students asked a number of questions.
The IOPC Funds is committed to sharing knowledge and raising awareness about the international liability and compensation regime. Each year, the organisation extends support to educational institutions by delivering lectures to university students, helping them gain a deeper understanding of the pertinent Conventions.
