The IOPC Funds’ Director, José Maura, was invited to participate in a regional workshop on the IMO Civil Liability Conventions in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).  The workshop, which took place from 8 to 12 December, was hosted by the Federal Transport Authority of the UAE, in cooperation with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) under its Integrated Technical Cooperation Programme (ITCP).

The Director delivered presentations on the international liability and compensation regime for oil pollution (the 1992 Civil Liability and Fund Conventions), the role of the IOPC Funds and the 2010 HNS Convention.  The programme was structured to allow for ample debate and discussion.

Overall, the workshop focused on the importance and need for accession or improved implementation of these key conventions and provided 32 participants from nine States with a comprehensive overview of the IMO liability conventions.

Engaging with States on a regional level provides an opportunity to discuss cooperation between neighbouring countries.  This direction for engagement has been encouraged by the IOPC Funds governing bodies on several occasions.
