At the invitation of the Regional Organization for the Conservation of the Environment of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden (PERSGA), and in cooperation with ITOPF and the International Group of P&I Associations, the IOPC Funds took part in a three-day regional workshop on compensation for pollution damage caused by oil and HNS. The workshop took place at the PERSGA Headquarters in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia from 27-29 April 2015 and attracted delegates from Djibouti, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Sudan.
The training workshop was dedicated to promoting the adoption and implementation of the relevant international instruments, including the 1992 Civil Liability Convention, 1992 Fund Convention, the 2010 HNS Convention as well as the Bunkers and Wreck Removal Conventions, in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden Region. The International Group, ITOPF and the IOPC Funds each gave a number of presentations and jointly ran a practical exercise involving a theoretical HNS incident. They also clarified the types of claims covered under the various liability regimes, and the criteria applied in order to make successful claims under those regimes.
Positive feedback was received from the participants and the IOPC Funds and PERSGA have discussed opportunities for further cooperation in the future.
