The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has notified the Director of the IOPC Funds, Mr Gaute Sivertsen, that the Solomon Islands deposited its instruments of accession to the 1992 Fund Convention and the Supplementary Fund Protocol on 27 November 2025.
Both the 1992 Fund Convention and the Supplementary Fund Protocol will enter into force for the Solomon Islands on 27 November 2026, bringing the total number of 1992 Fund Member States to 123 and Supplementary Fund Member States to 34.
Already Party to the 1992 Civil Liability Convention since 2005, the Solomon Islands will now have access to the full international liability and compensation regime for oil pollution damage. Membership of the Supplementary Fund will provide an additional tier of protection, raising the total compensation available for an incident to SDR 750 million, the equivalent of USD 1 billion today.
Director Sivertsen welcomed the accession, noting the increased financial protection it offers to individuals and entities in the event of a major oil pollution incident affecting the Solomon Islands.
An archipelago of more than 900 islands, the Solomon Islands relies heavily on shipping as its primary mode of transport.
