The Gambia to become the 117th Member State of the 1992 Fund

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has informed the Director of the IOPC Funds that the Republic of the Gambia deposited instruments of accession to the 1992 Civil Liability and Fund Conventions on 30 October 2019.  Both Conventions will enter into force for the Gambia on 30 October 2020, bringing the number of 1992 Fund Member States to 117 on that date.

The Gambia was Party to the 1971 Fund Convention until it ceased to be in force in May 2002 but was one of the few States which had not acceded to the new 1992 Fund Convention at the time and therefore, had ceased to be covered by the IOPC Funds. The Gambia was also one out of seven remaining States Parties to the 1969 CLC only.

The Funds’ Director, José Maura, has expressed how pleased he is that the Gambia has decided to join the 1992 Fund and that the country can once again benefit from the full protection that the international liability and compensation regime offers against the financial risk of oil pollution incidents.
