On 1 December 2022, the Deputy Director/Head of Claims, Liliana Monsalve, was pleased to meet with members of the delegation of Peru to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), led by the Director of Captaincies and Coastguards of the Peruvian Navy, Vice-Admiral Cesar Colunge Pinto, at the IOPC Funds’ offices.

Peru is Party to the 1992 Civil Liability Convention (1992 CLC), but is not a 1992 Fund Member State as it has not ratified the 1992 Fund Convention.

The Peruvian representatives and the Deputy Director discussed the incident that had affected the coastline of Peru earlier this year.  As reported previously, the 1992 Fund Convention does not apply to the incident (read more here).

Ms Monsalve took the opportunity to explain further the international liability and compensation regime for oil pollution damage and the different levels of compensation available under each of the 1992 Conventions.

The representatives of Peru expressed an interest in pursuing future collaboration and engagement with the IOPC Funds in order to reinforce the understanding of the compensation regime in the State.
