On 27 November 2014, the Director and Head of Claims Department, Mrs Liliana Monsalve, were invited to the Maritime Institute Willem Barentsz (MIWB), on the island of Terschelling, the Netherlands. MIWB currently consists of a maritime university, providing programmes for masters and chief engineers, as well as hydrographic surveyors. MIWB has over 500 full time students and is one of the best equipped maritime education and training institutes.
The Director gave a presentation to students of the Institute on the work of the IOPC Funds. He and Mrs Monsalve were then invited to visit the simulator centre which houses a full range of state of the art simulator systems. These systems include full mission ship bridges, a virtual engine room and cargo handling simulators, radar navigation and ARPA systems, a GMDSS simulator, fast ferry and suction dredger facilities and a Dynamic Positioning simulator. The new Oil Spill Response Simulator was introduced and the Director and Mrs Monsalve were given the opportunity to experience the simulator themselves.
The Director found the centre particularly impressive and intends to maintain a close relationship with the MIWB in the future.
