Webinar on the 2010 HNS Convention delivered to Thailand

On 25 June 2025, HNS Project Manager, Gillian Grant, delivered a webinar on the 2010 HNS Convention to representatives from Thailand’s Marine Department, oil and chemical importing companies and Thai shipowners.
Ms Grant provided an overview of the purpose of the HNS Convention and the benefits it will provide to Member States, ship and cargo owners and victims. She gave an overview of the structure of the Convention, its scope of application and the types of damage covered before explaining the reporting and contribution system which finances the HNS Fund. Ms Grant took the opportunity to discuss how States may implement the Convention including the development of a domestic reporting system.
The webinar concluded with a question and answer session which not only provided the participants with the chance to gain insight into any specific points of concern or doubt with regards to the Convention, but also helped the HNS Project Manager identify the areas where State and industry representatives could benefit from further support or training.
The two recent incidents involving HNS off the coast of Southern India underline the importance of States ratifying the HNS Convention to ensure a robust liability and compensation regime for ship-source HNS incidents.
