At the invitation of the Government of Morocco, the Director and the Head of External Relations and Conference attended the World Maritime Day Parallel Event in Tangiers from 27-29 October 2014. Every year IMO celebrates World Maritime Day as an opportunity to focus attention on the importance of shipping safety, maritime security and the marine environment and to emphasize a particular aspect of IMO’s work. This year’s theme was "IMO Conventions: effective implementation".
A number of panel sessions were organised to cover a range of topics related to the implementation of IMO Conventions. The Director took part in one of the panels to talk about the effective implementation of the liability and compensation conventions for tankers and took the opportunity of this trip to meet with the Minister of Transport and his cabinet to discuss issues related to the effective implementation of the 1992 Fund Convention and Supplementary Fund Protocol in Morocco.
The event was well attended by a number of delegations from around the world which provided further opportunities for discussions during the course of these three days.
