2nd webinar in the IOPC Funds’ series successfully delivered
The second session in the IOPC Funds’ webinar series took place on 4 December 2023.
Claims Manager, Mark Homan, delivered a 15-minute presentation on “Understanding the Conventions – What should be included in your domestic legislation?”. He covered the key elements of the 1992 Civil Liability and Fund Conventions that should be implemented into national law and explained that for the international regime for compensation to operate correctly it is essential for countries to properly implement the Conventions into domestic legislation. He gave examples of issues that have arisen, either for the IOPC Funds or the Member State in question, when the Conventions had not been fully or correctly implemented. He offered the Secretariat’s assistance in this regard and followed the presentation by answering a variety of questions from the audience. The event was delivered twice during the day in order to give participants from different time zones more flexibility to attend.
The webinar series, which is being delivered initially in English only, is open to any interested party and participants can opt to attend either the full series or only those webinars of particular interest to them. Divided into four modules, the full programme (available here) consists of a total of 11 webinars covering everything from the basic understanding of the Conventions, to the financing of the system, the types of claims that arise from tanker incidents and the claims submission process.
The next webinar in the series is set to take place on 17 January 2024 and will focus on the financing of the system and, in particular, why oil reports are essential. To register for the next event, please complete the registration form, selecting your preferred time slot.
