MEDEXPOL 2018
Claims Manager, Chiara Della Mea, participated in a regional workshop on preparedness and response to Hazardous and Noxious Substances (HNS) spills in Valletta, Malta from 20 to 21 June 2018. The workshop was organised by the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC) and co-financed by the Mediterranean Trust Fund (MTF) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Integrated Technical Cooperation Programme (ITCP).
The workshop was attended by representatives of 17 Mediterranean States, as well as governmental and non-governmental organisations. It provided the participants with an overview of the achievements and ongoing development of guidelines and tools related to preparedness and response to HNS spills as well as an opportunity to discuss plans for future developments.
The presentation by the IOPC Funds focused on the implementation of the HNS Convention and recent developments towards its entry into force, including the ratification of the 2010 HNS Protocol by three States. It also explained the main features of the HNS Convention which illustrated the benefits of the compensation regime and the potential issues that could arise with regard to claims following an HNS incident.
