Working Group of the International Seabed Authority, London

On 28 September 2017 the Director, Mr José Maura, attended a meeting of a Working Group established by the Legal and Technical Commission of the International Seabed Authority (ISA). The Legal Working Group focuses on liability for environmental harm from activities in the area and its members include senior academics and policymakers, as well as officials from the ISA Secretariat, and the Commonwealth Secretariat.
The deep seabed mining regime has identified the potential role of special funds and insurance in providing sources for compensation and Mr Maura was invited to deliver a presentation on the work of the IOPC Funds and the international liability and compensation regime in general to enable the Working Group to learn of the Funds’ experience.
